They apply physics principles to ensure safety and quality of care for the patients and for the radiation protection of patients, carers, healthcare professionals, members of the public and the environment.

In Switzerland, the requirements for the education and specialist training of medical physicists working as health professionals in Switzerland are set by the Swiss Society of Radiobiology and Medical physics (SSRMP). The SSRMP certification can be obtained with two specializations: medical radiation physics or medical imaging. Radiation oncology falls within the medical radiation physics specialization.
